Christine’s Story
Australian born, Christine Houston moved to Denmark at age 7 with her Mum who was highly organised and LOVED to document Christine’s life in photo albums and VHS tape (over 800 hours worth!)
At 12 years of age, Christine’s Mum gave her a point and shoot camera and Christine became obsessed with flower photography and then moved into taking photos of the people around her.
After 14 years in Denmark, Christine still didn’t feel that she fit in with the Danish people she was surrounded by and made the decision to come back to Australia to spend time with her Dad’s side of the family in South East Queensland. She immediately felt at home.
Unfortunately, in 2016 her beloved Mum passed away after a battle with breast cancer. Christine felt alone. Her friends tried to help but they never really understood. Her grief weighed on her and it was a difficult time in her life. It was during this time that Christine really immersed herself into her photography and began exploring a darker, moodier style. Her fine art images were a form of therapy and helped her to find her way through her grief.
After completing her Bachelor of Creative Arts and Media at James Cook University, it was time for Christine to start her career.
Helping Others
Christine began working for other photographers taking newborn and wedding photos which she still does part time. The thing she began to realise is that her passion really lies in wanting to help others to discover how art can aid them to process their own grief and struggles. Being able to open up a conversation and give people an outlet for their darker emotions and mental health challenges is what motivates Christine with her photography.
When she was towards the end of her grieving period, Christine got a tattoo to symbolise her journey. Her art pieces are similar – a way to encapsulate the metamorphosis you go through when faced with dark times. The process can be incredibly healing, and the artwork is a reminder of your strength, resilience and something that helped you to evolve into who you are today. They also make for a fantastic talking point!
Other interests
When she’s not taking photos, you can usually find Christine out scouting for new photo shoot locations, going on nature walks or playing a video game.
She has fond memories of early years on cattle and sheep farms in the Cape York region of North Queensland and loves to get back there and help out on the farms of friends and family as much as possible. Finding a quiet corner on the land always gives her an opportunity to take photos too.
